Iron Shots (IV/IM)

About Iron Shots (IV/IM)

Iron Shots supplement iron-poor blood. This iron deficiency injection is ideal for those who are unable to orally ingest iron tablets. They are also taken by anaemic individuals who typically require large dosages of supplementary iron.

Low iron levels occur when the body is unable to absorb enough iron from food (commonly as a result of poor nutrition or poor absorption), or after instances of large or long-term blood loss (e.g. haemophilia, stomach bleeding). Additionally, certain gastrointestinal conditions impair iron absorption, leading to iron deficiency. Examples include inflammatory bowel disease and gastric bypass surgery.

Aside from these groups, individuals suffering from long-term kidney disease can benefit from iron deficiency injections.

Iron is found in our red blood cells and carries oxygen throughout the body. The Iron Shot (IV/IM) supplements our natural iron reserves, which are used for the purposes of red cell production.

Treatment indications

Several factors affect the body's natural iron levels. The main ones are:

  • Dietary deficiencies;
  • Impaired iron absorption;
  • Pregnancy;
  • Bleeding (including menstruation).
  • Pregnancy typically increases the body’s iron requirements due to the resources needed for the development of the foetus and placenta, as well as the need to increase maternal red blood cell mass. Women with multiple pregnancies and/or borderline low iron levels prior to pregnancy are at a higher risk for developing an iron deficiency. Pregnant and lactating women can receive Iron IM Shots, as long as this is cleared by their doctor beforehand.

    Benefits of Iron Shots

    Iron Shots benefit many different conditions. They increase energy levels, protect heart health and complement our Vitamin D Shot.

    Iron deficiency injections are 100% safe. Rarely, however, Iron shots can result in a number of side effects. Whilst uncommon, a change in taste - as well as gastrointestinal pains, nausea and cramps - can result after Iron shots. Contact your IV/IM practitioner and doctor if these symptoms persist for more than 48 hours.
